Farm Bill

We have the opportunity to shape the health, equity, and long-term economic and environmental sustainability of the U.S. farm and food system, but it requires grassroots participation in the policy-making process to make change happen.

The Sustainable Agriculture Coalition (SAC) is working to reform and construct policies and programs that truly support our small and mid-sized farms, protect and conserve our natural resources and environment, and breathe new life into our rural communities. All sections of the farm bill hold significant opportunities for crafting cost-effective, high-impact policies that can increase farm profitability and improve the health of individuals, communities, and the environment.

In May 2008, SAC completed its fourth federal farm bill campaign. While Congress may not reauthorize the farm bill again until 2013, the campaign for the next Farm Bill begins today. While SAC is engaged in the important work of making sure that 2008 farm bill programs that support conservation, organic production and research, beginning farmers, and local and regional food systems are properly implemented by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and funded, it is also working with its members to continue growing the movement for a better farm bill the next time around.
